Laundry detergent isn’t usually top of mind when you think about going green, but it can be one of the dirtiest products in your house! So much so that when I found out I was pregnant, finding a “baby-safe” detergent was one of the first things my mom told me to do. Luckily, I had already found Buckaroo Organics Soapberry Suds!
Buckaroo Organics Soapberry Suds
Soapberries—the main ingredient in the Buckaroo Organics Soapberry Suds Organic Laundry Detergent—are members of the lychee family, native to tropical regions, and their husks are 100% saponins, aka soap. They’ve been used by indigenous people for centuries to clean everything from clothes to dishes to bodies, and are finally making their way into the mainstream via green-beauty brands like Buckaroo Organics.Unlike the plethora of chemicals in conventional detergents—and even those in “plant-based” detergents or “vegetable-derived” laundry care—the soapberry in Buckaroo Organics formula is unaltered, making it great for sensitive or allergy prone skin, or for use with cloth diapers (hello baby-safe!).
This is one instance in which I’m happy to report nothing has changed: and that’s a good thing! I’ve been using the Buckaroo Organics Soapberry Suds for about a month now, and not once have I experienced a disappointing load of laundry. I’ve never had to re-wash because it didn’t do a good enough job; never had to use more than a single scoop at a time, regardless of the size; and I’ve never noticed any kind of lingering smell after a wash. It’s just a good detergent that does its job—naturally! Now, if you’re the type that would miss the smell of freshly washed laundry, fear not: you can add scent in the dryer! In addition to their soapberry suds, Buckaroo Organics’ wool dryer balls can be scented with 5-10 drops of organic essential oils. I don’t know about you, but there’s something oh-so-lux about creating a custom, organic fragrance for my laundry! Like conventional detergents, conventional dryer sheets can be irritating to the skin and a major source of allergic reactions. So using wool dryer balls (scented or not
) will do the same static-reducing, fabric-softening job without all the nasties. Here are some of the things in conventional laundry products that you won't find in Buckaroo Organics:
- Boric Acid, a buffering agent that's potentially toxic to reproduction and has a sensitizing effect (meaning the more you use it, the more irritating it becomes).
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), the chemical used to make soaps lather, which can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. SLS is actually used as an irritant in studies that call for intentional skin irritation (crazy, right?!).
- Artificial fragrance, a mix of up to 3,000 synthetic ingredients known to cause skin irritation and hormone disruption.
